Brief Introduction of China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda

In 1980, the Wolong Nature Reserve joined the China Biosphere Reserve Network ( short as CBRN) , United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( Short as UNESCO ). At the same year, with the help of the WWF, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda were found. In 1983, the Research Center was  formally found. Its main tasks are doing the applied researches about the giant panda breeding and multiply, as well as the researches on the field of the giant panda and rear animals and plants behavior,  ecology, breeding, propagate, nursery, biochemical physiology, incretion, inheritance, protection of disease, manual rejuvenescence, population monitoring, and so forth. After many years of research, the giant panda experts solved the three problems in the giant pandas mating, ingravidation and the survival of the cubs. The problem of the giant pandas mating, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda mainly researched the subject of the training of the stub giant panda, and successfully trained 4 stub giant panda in recent year. Fully researched the collection, refrigeration and capacitation of the giant pandas semen, and the exogenous hormones fo the female giant panda, the experts solve the proble of the giant panda ingravidation. In 2000, the female giant pandas, which had not gave birth to the cubs after successfully mating, all gave birth to the cubs, and solved the problem of the survival of the cubs also. The young experts of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda did a lot of research in the nursery environment, immunity and the artificial milking, feeding skill, and gained a great achievement in the survival of the giant panda cubs. In 1998, the Research Center got 4 fetuses 5 foals, 4 survived; in 1999, 4 fetuses 8 foals, one triplet, two pairs of twins, 7 survived. 2000 was an amazing year. There were 11 female pandas rut, and 8 fetuses 12 foals, 11 survived ( the only one was dead once born), 4 pairs of twins, 4 uniparous, which broke the two records in the giant panda breeding history, the year of most birth and the highest survival rates. The parturition rate of the pregnant female panda was 72.7%, and the survival rate of the cub was 91.6%, which were head the list of the country. Those years, the cub survival rates were 100%, from 1991 to 2004, there are 47 fetuses 60 foals born at the center and 57 survived. In 2002, in order to release the population pressure, with the supporting of the State Forestry Administration, the Bifengxia Branch was found. Many foreign zoos brought the giant pandas form the Research Center, such as the National Zoo in Washington D.C., USA, the San Diego Zoo, the Kobe Oji Zoo of Japan, the Ching Mai Zoo of Thiland, Schloss Sch?nbrunn Zoo of Austria, which earns a great foreign exchange through export. All the incoming is used to supporting the China Wildlife Conservation.

The most important programs of the research will be the reintroduction and clone of the giant panda. Recently, the Research Center keeps the largest captive giant panda population of about 80 individuals, which contributes a lot to the giant panda conservation.

Cooperating with the WWF, the Research Center keeps on doing the bioecology research in the Wuyipeng, specially the monitoring on the giant panda and its commensals within 10 sq.km. The Research Center begun the research program Biological Research on the Sperm Bank and Insemination of the Giant Panda and the research on the Giant Panda filial generation behavior occurring and function. The Research Center also cooperated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the subject of giant panda clone, and solves the problem of the nursery of the giant panda cub, and successfully cultured the tissue cell. The Research Center did further research in the field of the little panda breeding, bioecology and the disease prevention. In the program of the geographical information system of the Wolong Nature Reserve, which was cooperated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was basically completed and introduced to the member of China Biosphere Reserve Network. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda keeps on monitoring the plant resource in the Wolong Nature Reserve, and finished the third giant panda survey.
China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Pandas finial goal is to reintroduce the captive giant panda, which can enrich the wild giant panda population and improve the breeding of the giant panda. During the duration of Ninth Five Year Plan, the Research center finished the enlarging of the giant panda enclosure, and finished the first-stage construction of the Giant Panda Garden in 2000, semi-wild enclosures were built up. The center planes to built up a second-stage construction of the Giant Panda Garden in the wild field, which will be 4 to 5 Sq.Km., and seeks to 8000,000 to 100,000,000 RMB supporting. It will be used to do some work in advance of the reintroduce, such as the training of the giant pandas wildness, the survival capability in the wild field, some survey of the entironment, the research on the parasites and the preventive medicine. The Research Center hopes that there will be 5 giant panda reintroduced in to the wild field before 2010. However, the key point in the giant panda reintroduction is the experiment and research before the reintroduction, which need the supporting from the government and the related experts. The reintroduction of the giant panda is really a difficult work. Through this program, the Center hopes to improve the conserve of other species, which is the ultimate objective of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda.

China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda gains a great deal achievement in the field of conservation and research of the rare species in Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, especially in the field of conservation and research of the giant panda. It is the leading institution in the research of the giant panda. Looking back to the course of the struggle, the supporting of the national government is so important. The national leaders, Song Jian, Qiao Shi, Zhu Rongji, Wu Yi, Wu Bangguo, Li Nanqing, Li Ruihuan, Tian Jiyuan, Li Tieying, Qian Qisheng, and so on. Visited the Research Center and put a premium on the center.
